They had noticed that I was repeatedly asking for corrections to the alignment of the tables on pages 33 and 37 but even from looking back at my originals they couldn't figure out what I was objecting to. As far as they could tell they were exactly the same. So we had a phone conversation. "OK," I said. "See the rightmost column, labeled 'Total pairs'?" "Yes." "See the numerals 1, then 1, then 2?" "Yes." "See the next one down, the 3?" "Yes. " "The 3 is about half a character to the right of the 2." Pause. "Blimey, you've got good eyesight." So he said that they would fix it. I said "Yes, what I want is for the numerals to be set in neat columns....". Then I bit off the rest of the sentence because I had been about to finish "...that look as if they had been professionally typeset." I swear I wasn't trying to slam the typesetters; it just came out that way. Sigh.
